Why Imvi helps with Dyslexia

Professor of Optometry and Head of Department at Karolinska Institutet

"With Dyslexia, the effect of the training is that in reading, where phonetics and eye coordination must work together, you have extra capacity to control your eyes, which makes reading and interpreting what you read easier."

About our dyslexia test

Imvis' dyslexia test offers a quick and easy way to find out if your challenges match common dyslexia symptoms.

The test consists of 10-20 questions that assess your reading, writing, and comprehension skills. It only takes 2-5 minutes to complete, and you get the results immediately.

After the test, you will be told whether or not you are likely to have dyslexia. Although it is not a diagnosis, it can help you decide whether you need to proceed with a more comprehensive evaluation.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a neurobiological condition that affects a person's ability to read, write, and understand text. It is one of the most common causes of reading and writing difficulties and is estimated to affect up to 10% of the population.

Common symptoms include difficulties in recognizing words, understanding text, writing correctly, and learning new words – although these may be hidden by strong memory or good verbal skills in children.

Early Signs of Dyslexia

Symptoms of dyslexia can vary depending on age and access to support. In children, early signs may include delays in speech development, difficulty learning new words, problems with rhyming or learning the alphabet, numbers and days of the week.

Signs of Dyslexia in School Age

At school age, symptoms become more obvious and may include problems reading aloud, slow reading speed, difficulty understanding text that is read, problems with spelling, and avoidance of reading.

Why test for dyslexia?

Imvis's dyslexia test is a quick and easy way to find out if your difficulties with reading, writing or concentration may be linked to dyslexia.

Many people live with undetected dyslexia, which can affect their experience at school, at work, and in everyday life.

Early detection can make a big difference and contribute to an easier and more balanced life.

*Criteria for the Imvi guarantee

Our training is developed in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet. Many people feel the results after just a few weeks, but for lasting improvements, you need to train twice the time it takes to become symptom-free or reach a plateau, and at least 12 weeks of training are recommended. This training consists of watching a film for 15 minutes, 4 times a week. To measure the effect of your training, tests are done before, in the middle and after 12 weeks / 3 months of training.

For the Imvi guarantee to apply, you must:

  • Carry out all tests so that we can measure how good your results are.
  • Exercise at least 4 times a week for 15 minutes as research shows that this is the amount of exercise required for lasting results.

If, against all odds, you do not show improvements in your reading speed, while still meeting the criteria for the Imvi guarantee, you will get your money back, and you will of course keep the VR glasses.

Is it dyslexia or a visual impairment – or both?

Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects reading, spelling, and writing. It makes it harder to process written text, even though intelligence is completely normal.

Meanwhile, vision problems, such as convergence insufficiency – where the eyes have difficulty working together – can cause symptoms such as double vision, eye strain or getting lost while reading. These symptoms can be similar to or worsen those associated with dyslexia.

Finding out whether your challenges are due to dyslexia, vision problems, or a combination of both is an important first step in getting the right support. The best part is that training that improves brain-eye coordination can lead to major improvements in both reading and learning.

Frequently asked questions about Imvis training:

What is trained with Imvi's VR training?

The training focuses on improving the brain's control of the eyes for better eye coordination. This improves blood flow and oxygenation of the brain, which increases reading speed, reading endurance and concentration.

How long do you have to train to see results?

For lasting results, 15 minutes of exercise, 4 times a week for at least 12 weeks is recommended.

The length of time you need to exercise depends on your current symptoms. Scientific studies show that most people need at least 12 weeks of exercise to achieve lasting improvements.

Once you have become symptom-free, we recommend that you continue training for the same length of time it took to become symptom-free to achieve permanent results.

For example: If you become symptom-free after 6 weeks of training, you should continue for another 6 weeks to ensure permanent results.

Many users notice improvements within the first few weeks, which increases motivation to continue. We guide you through every step to ensure you succeed at your own pace!

How long do the results last?

Studies show that improvements in coordination are permanent if you follow our training program long enough.

Can you exercise if you wear glasses/contact lenses?

Yes, nearsightedness is not affected by regular glasses or contact lenses.

However, the glasses must fit in the VR glasses. If you need glasses to see well at a distance of about two meters, you should use glasses.

People who use prism glasses, please contact us before training.

Does everyone who exercises get better?

We have trained over 4,000 people and over 99% of those who have completed the training have had improved comprehension/improved reading speed.

Are there any risks to exercising?

Consciousness training is risk-free, but the following people must consult us or their optician/orthoptist before training:

  • People with visible strabismus and/or who use prism lenses.
  • People with amblyopia (who have always had poor vision in one eye) or who were treated with a patch as children.
  • People who have double vision after stroke, concussion and post-covid.
What streamed content can you watch?

Right now you can stream all content from SVT Play, YouTube, UR Play and Binogi in the app.

What type of VR glasses work for Imvis training?

We strongly recommend using only Imvis VR. We have evaluated a large number of VRs, and have optimized the training optically for the model we use. Our VRs have good optical properties, can adjust focus and pupil distance, work so that you can wear glasses underneath, can handle basically all screen sizes, are comfortable and easy to handle.

We also recommend that each person who trains uses their own VR, as sharpness and pupil distance settings differ between individuals.

All instructions are made to match our model.

We cannot provide support on how to use other models as we do not know all models. We also cannot guarantee the results as the optical properties may differ.

Can you train without VR glasses?

No, the VR glasses are needed so that each eye gets its own small monitor, which is needed for the training to work.

How much better can I get with training?

Studies show that the vast majority of people increase their reading speed by about 60% on average. For people with reading difficulties, the improvements are often significantly greater.

The symptoms associated with vision problems, such as headaches, fatigue, eye strain, and concentration problems, etc., decrease with exercise.

Who can benefit from Imvis VR training?

We have trained people between the ages of 7 and 81. All who have completed the training have improved their reading speed. Common symptoms of nearsightedness are headaches, fatigue, eye strain and concentration problems related to reading or close work.

We have seen very good results in people with vision problems , dyslexia and ADHD . People who have hidden strabismus , double vision , double vision after stroke , concussion or post-covid must consult us or their optician before training. People who read a lot or do a lot of close work can greatly benefit from our training.

How can I monitor my child's training with Imvi?

Imvi offers a free account in the app for parents/guardians who want to monitor their child's training.

To monitor your child's exercise, tap “Sign Up Here” under the “Create Account” button. Then follow the instructions in the app to add your child to your monitoring account.
