Binocular vision problems may be a hidden cause of reading difficulties

A growing problem in schools is that students have difficulty reading. This not only affects learning, but also students' opportunities for future education and employment.

There are many reasons for this, but one that is often overlooked concerns the brain’s coordination of the eyes. Opticians call this “binocular vision problems,” “hidden strabismus,” or “vergence problems.” About 10% of people have problems with convergence insufficiency, and among children and teenagers it is over 20%. Sometimes people with dyslexia or ADHD also have problems with convergence insufficiency, but because convergence insufficiency can cause similar symptoms to these, it can be difficult to distinguish and diagnose.

However, it is possible to train away these problems. With Imvi, you can improve significantly in just 12 weeks. Training relieves the brain and leads to increased reading speed and improved concentration. It also helps if, for example, you are often tired, have headaches or suffer from eye strain.

Standard methods don’t address vision difficulties, which require specialized vision training to improve eye coordination. Often, routine school eye exams fail to detect these issues, leaving many students struggling with their effects without understanding the cause.

Symptoms to watch out for

Signs that indicate a student has may have issues with their binocular vision. Please contact an optician or healthcare provider if the student:

  • Squinting, tilting their head or closing one eye when reading or looking at a screen.

  • Holds objects close to the eyes or sits far forward in the classroom to see properly.

  • Shows disinterest or inability to concentrate.

  • Complains of headache.

  • Has difficulty reading, reads slowly or mixes up letters such as n and u, p and b, d and b.

  • Complains that the text appears double or jumps in front of the eyes.

  • Feeling abnormally tired.

Symptoms are often detected at school

In schools, problems such as myopia are often detected during regular health checks. Children are offered at least three health checks from preschool to ninth grade, where vision should be checked on at least one occasion. Vision loss can occur quickly, and school checks are not frequent enough and are not comprehensive enough to detect them in time.

Myopia is a rapidly increasing problem in society. By 2050, it is estimated that half of the world's population will be nearsighted, with the greatest increase among children. This is serious as myopia increases the risk of developing eye diseases later in life.

Increased use of tablets and mobile phones at close range for very long and continuous periods of time is believed to be the cause. Reduced time outdoors in sunlight also has a negative impact. At the same time, problems with eye coordination are increasing. Eye coordination is not examined at all in schools.

How can your school get started with Imvi?

The school identifies the students who have the greatest reading problems. Teachers and special educators usually have a good insight into which students need our training. In connection with this, you can take our free consensus test on our website.

We send out VR glasses and links to instructions to the school. Imvi Labs then holds a digital review of the training and the structure, both for the educators involved and for the concerned guardians.

Students can download the app to their respective phones. When students register, their guardians must give their approval for the handling of data and training; which also gives the school access to the data. Therefore, there is nothing the school needs to manage.

Educators can follow their students' training and results via a web interface, and guardians can download the app in a version from which they can follow their child's training.

Imvi Labs helps schools

Students' ability to read and understand texts is a central part of the Swedish curriculum. According to the curriculum, teaching Swedish should promote students' linguistic and literary development as well as their ability to communicate and use the language as a tool for learning. Reading is a key skill that is crucial for students' success in school and life.

Imvi Labs offers a unique method to improve students' reading skills by strengthening eye-hand coordination through training. The method is based on scientific research and has been shown to be effective in increasing reading speed, concentration, and promoting reading development in students of different ages.

Imvi Labs' patented solution is developed in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet. The method involves training eye-hand coordination with a mobile app by watching streamed content in VR glasses.

Curriculum goals that the Imvi Labs method can contribute to:

Reading Comprehension : The Imvi Labs method improves students' ability to focus on and understand texts. This strengthens their reading comprehension and helps them process and interpret different types of texts.

Reading speed : Through regular training with Imvi Labs, students can increase their reading speed, which is an important aspect of being able to handle large amounts of text effectively.

Concentration : Improving eye-hand coordination with the Imvi Labs method can also increase students' ability to concentrate, which is crucial for being able to read carefully and follow complex texts.

Web portal and access via mobile app for educators: There is a web portal and also access via mobile app for educators to follow students' training and development.

The Imvi method in practice: We alternate tests with training to be able to follow the students' development and to be able to optimize the difficulty and length of the training.

Entertaining & effective training

Stream your favorite series in VR

You can easily train by watching streamed content via the Imvi app on your mobile phone that sits in our VR glasses.

Train while streaming your favorite shows

Through the app you choose what type of content you want to watch. We currently support content from Youtube, SVT Play, Binogi, UR Play and content directly from your phone's camera roll.

Train your eye coordination

The app makes the image stream oscillate from right to left. But your brain perceives it as a regular movie.

You watch your series -
Our App does the rest

The training focuses on improving the brain's control of the eyes for better eye coordination. This improves blood flow and oxygenation of the brain, which increases reading speed, reading endurance and concentration.

Follow your progress

In the app you can easily follow your progress over time and receive recommendations for continued training.

Personalized tips based on your progress

In the app you can follow your or your children's development and results. We offer free accounts for parents to monitor their children's progress! After completing the training, you will receive personal recommendations for further training based on your results and progress.
