Screen time that makes a difference – students practice reading with VR
When screen time is discussed in school, it often involves concern. But at Friskolan Hästens in Farsta, they have found a way to use technology to strengthen students' reading. In collaboration with Imvi Labs, students practice binocular vision with VR – and the results are clear.
Two years of VR training in the classroom
Since the autumn of 2023, various year levels at Friskolan Hästens have tried Imvi's VR training with the whole class. It started with year 3, continued with year 1 in the spring, and this autumn it is again year 3 that is training.
The results speak for themselves
After 12 weeks of training, students show impressive improvements:
- 📈 +145% in average reading speed for sentences requiring reading comprehension
- 🚀 Students who were below the class average at the start increased by an average of +250%
- 🌟 Even those who were already above average improved by +61%
All students improved their reading.
A new kind of screen time
The principal describes the experience as "a bit crazy" – a silent classroom where all students sit completely focused with VR glasses. It is an unusual element in the school day, but one that has quickly become a natural part of the teaching.
Media attention
The local newspaper Mitt i Stockholm recently reported on the initiative. The article can be read here
