Members of Parliament Niels Paarup-Petersen and Fredrik Malm, who both sit on the Education Committee, have taken the initiative for a parliamentary seminar on how research from Karolinska Institute can help solve the reading crisis by identifying and addressing consensus problems with VR training in schools.
The latest PISA survey showed that a quarter of Sweden's 15-year-olds cannot read or count properly. At the same time, research shows that many schoolchildren suffer from attention deficit disorder – a common cause of reading difficulties.
Cross-eye problems mean that even though each eye works well individually, they do not work together optimally. Students with cross-eye problems are often unaware that they have it, but become tired from reading and have difficulty concentrating in school.
The positive thing is that it is possible to train away problems with coherence and thus improve reading skills.
It has been shown that everyone becomes better at reading by practicing eye coordination, but it is especially beneficial for students who struggle with reading.
